About Us
History
Started by MCV Hospital Auxiliary in 1984, HHH was first
located
in Zeigler House, a 28-bed, eight-room
19th century brown stone located two blocks from MCV. In order
to provide lodging for more guests, HHH moved in
1994
to a 121-room renovated hotel at its current location of 7th and
Marshall Streets.
Richmond's Hospital Hospitality
House, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is one of
the
oldest hospitality houses in the U.S. It is the 5th largest in the
country and is the largest
that operates on donations only.
Facility
Over 100 guest rooms available. The 5th floor is dedicated to
adult
transplant patients
and care givers, and the 8th floor is dedicated to pediatric
patients and caregivers.
Guests have access to 4 fully stocked kitchens, a
library with
3,000
books, a 24-hour
laundry room, and lounge areas. HHH is open 24 hours a day - 365
days a year. Most guests are from Virginia, but HHH has served
families in medical crisis from all 50 states and from 31
foreign countries.
100,000+ = number of guests at HHH since 1985
6,700 = average number of guests a year
140 = average number of guests per night
6 = average number of days a guest stays
Cost
Guests are encouraged to give a $10-a-day minimum donation,
but
no one is turned
away if unable to pay. Over 30% of guests cannot afford to make
any
donation. If
not for HHH, many guests would have to pay for
lodging and meals at area hotels and restaurants, estimated at $100
a
day.
Hospitals
Eight affiliated hospitals refer guests to HHH. MCVH of the VCU
Health System and the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center
refer the
majority.
Benefits
HHH provides safe, affordable, comfortable lodging for families
in medical
crisis.
A unique sense of camaraderie exists among guests as all are in
medical crisis
- and often hundreds of miles away from home. Two part-time
social workers on staff at HHH provide counseling
and support
when needed.
Volunteers/Staff
Volunteers provide over 10,000 hours a year to help keep
facility staff
numbers low - only 21 full-time staff and 9 part-time staff.
Budget
$1.5 million annual budget.
40% of operating costs funded through joint venture with MCVH.
Remaining funds raised through contributions and events.
